The starting point is the old church of St. Gertraud in Sulden at 1850m above sea level. Take route no. 4 to Tabaretta Hütte. After many winding paths and a bit of effort you will reach Tabaretta Hütte on the ’Marltscheid’ at 2556m above sea level. You now have a long way to cross to reach ’Bärenkopfscharte’ at 2871m above sea level. Here you will be opposite the Stilfserjoch, the Ortler with its ’normal path’ and at the same time you will be in Trafoital. The last winding paths lead to Payer Hütte at 3029m above sea level, the first mountain cabin of Ortler’s normal ascent. You can use the same path to descend to Bärenkopfscharte and then turn off into Trafoital on route no. 185. After a few winding paths you turn left into route no.186 and go at first over some even ground in a southwesterly direction to Bergl-Hütte. You then cross the Tabaretta Grat, arrive at Lawinengraben below ’Hinteren Wandlen’ and you can now see the mountain cabin. After another crossing you arrive at Bergl Hütte at 2188m above sea level. The last part of the descent you have to cope with winding paths as far as ’Hl. Drei Brunnen’ at 1605m and from then on, on the almost even access road to Trafoi.
