In the heart of the Vinschgau Valley
The village of Prad has about 3,000 inhabitants, numerous shops, restaurants and pubs. Prad is located in the heart of the Vinschgau Valley, about 48 km from Meran. Up to the Stelvio Pass it’s about 24 km.
Situated in the National Park you will find protected nature and big variety. From the slopes of the Ortler group down to the valley to the river mouth of the Sulden river, the “Prader Sand”, which is acknowledged as the bird reservoir “Natura 2000”.
Prad is the ideal starting point for journeys in the surrounding area, hiking and biking tours. The Vinschgau bike path leads through the village. In the winter there are seven nearby skiing areas belonging to the Ortler Skiarena.
Sights in Prato/Prad
- The National Park house Aquaprad is a visitor’s center wherein the water is the theme of the exhibition. The visitor dives into the near and strange world of the fishes in the mountains. Opening times: perennial from Tuesday to Friday 09.30 to 12.30 and from 14.30 to 17:30. Saturday from 14.30 to 17:30. Closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays. - Church “St. Johann”, the oldest church in Prad am Stilfserjoch. A consecration of 1281 testifies that this is a building with stepped circular apse and a flat ceiling in the nave. On the north wall of the nave you find remnants of Romanesque frescoes and paintings in the apse of 1420. Since 2006 this church take part of the Romanesque project “Stairways to Heaven”.
- St. George’s Church in Agums, a gothic church, with the “Great God”, a 4-meter-high crucifix.
- Prader Sand, a vast natural state area with a pronounced vegetation, is the sandy river delta of Solda creek.
